报告题目

Surface and Interfacial Properties of Organic Crystalline Solids

报告简介

The surface and interfacial properties of a crystalline solid influences powder processability, particle handling and particle performance. We will show that crystalline solids have highly variable (anisotropic) surface energetics. A new methodology based on inverse gas chromatography (IGC) for determination of surface energy applied to study variations of surface properties due to crystallisation conditions, milling and their impact on dissolution rates and granulation will be presented. IGC heterogeneity is used to map differences in surface properties, relating to changes in particle properties such as shape/habit and exposure of internal cleavage planes. Finally, I will share our group’s work on the influence of interfaces on nucleation and crystallisation for small molecules, peptides and proteins, for downstream bioseparation, highlighting the importance of interfacial science in bridging fundamental understanding with practical strategies for the design and control of particulate systems.

嘉宾简介

Jerry Heng (JH) is currently a Professor in Particle Technology and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. JH obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London (2006) and a B.Eng in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2002). JH research focuses on surfaces and interfaces of particulate materials. A current key research activity of his group is in the area of nucleation and crystal growth, with the aim of developing crystallisation as a separation strategy for the purification of biopharmaceuticals. JH is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Editor-in-Chief for Chemical Engineering Research and Design and Thematic Editor for Particuology.
