Abstract

Succeeding the first two successful conferences, APT 2000 (Bangkok, Thailand, 2000) and APT 2003 (Penang, Malaysia, 2003), the Third Asian Particle Technology Symposium, APT 2007, was held from September 3 to 5 in Beijing. The theme of APT 2007 was Small Particle Technology, to reflect one of the most advanced sectors both in forefront fundamental research and in application of particles at the nanometer and sub-micron scales. More than 14 countries and 315 participants attended the symposium presenting about 150 papers published in two volumes of proceedings.

In his plenary speech, Prof. Jonathan Seville, analyzing the current features of Particle Technology, said, “two of the strongest drivers are energy engineering – obviously closely linked to the important problem of global warming – and healthcare engineering,” and “new ways of making (often smaller) particles, new ways of introducing greater functionality, understanding scaling issues in modeling and new measurement techniques for following particle behavior at all these scales” are the fundamental challenges.

Prof. Yong Jin from Tsinghua University expounded the essential nature of particle-fluid systems and reactor design using an old Chinese philosophy, that, he said, “Everything can be divided into two opposite parts: positive and negative. These two opposite parts can form a more wonderful whole.” And he said, “We should concentrate on examining some important positive and negative impacts of particle sizes, bubbles, clustering, and column walls on the physics and chemistry in a chemical reactor with the aim of developing useful strategies for the engineering design of fluidized bed reactors and optimization of reactor performance.”

The preparation and application of particle technology cover the broad range from waste water treatment to drug release. For example, Prof. Jesse Zhu spoke on “Drug Release Using Particle Technology”, and Prof. Guangsheng Luo expounded the micro-dispersion process and its application in particle preparation.

We may easily find from this symposium that Particle Technology is providing effective basics of both a physical and a chemical character in solving issues connected to our real life, such as energy and healthcare. How to connect academia and industry remains a basic concern for researchers.

In one word, APT 2007 offers a unique platform to promote not only exchanges between all the fields that use particles, but also mutual understanding and close friendship between scientists and engineers in this field. Let's look forward to the 4th APT meeting which will be held in New Delhi, India in 2009.
