Abstract

This special issue contains selected papers presented at the 7th International Symposium on Spouted Beds.

The first four International Spouted Bed symposia were all held in Vancouver in conjunction with Canadian Chemical Engineering’s annual conferences, with Norman Epstein either as Symposium Chair (1982, 1991 and 2002) or as a Program Co-Chair (with Kishan Mathur as Symposium Chair in 1973). The 5th Symposium was held in Beijing, China, on July 21–23, 2008. Professors Xiaojun Bao of the China University of Petroleum, Beijing, and Jim Lim of the University of British Columbia co-chaired the event, with Norman Epstein as Honorary Chair. Like the first four international conferences, the 6th International Symposium on Spouted Beds was again held in Vancouver, B.C., during the 62nd Canadian Chemical Engineering conference, with Jim Lim as Chair, and Xiaojun Bao, Martin Olazar, and Sandra Rocha as Co-Chairs.

The 7th International Symposium on Spouted Beds was held for the first time in Europe, specifically in Barcelona, Spain, on October 1–5, 2017, as a joint event within the 10th World Congress of Chemical Engineering, with Martin Olazar as Chair and Jim Lim, Wenqi Zhong, and Marcos Barrozo as Co-Chairs.

Delegates from 14 countries attended the conference, presenting three keynote lectures, 21 oral communications and 27 posters. The papers presented may be classified into the following three groups: hydrodynamics (including heat and mass transfer), modelling and simulation based on sophisticated numerical techniques, and applications. Although the papers related to hydrodynamics continue to dominate, there has been a significant increase in the number of articles related to modelling and simulation, specifically CFD simulation. The papers related to applications have also increased slightly, specifically those involving modified spouted beds, which is explained by the need for novel reactors for producing high value-added products. Following a thorough review and revision process, 21 papers are now being published in this special issue.
